Aerostructure Weight and Cost Savings From a Combination of Metallic and Composite Materials
Hawksland Associates has conducted an independent study assessing a range of materials and manufacturing technologies for aircraft fuselage panels, investigating the weight and cost savings from a combination of Metallic and Composite materials.
A state-of-the-art metallic fuselage serves as a reference and the following new technologies are subject of the comparison: FML (Fiber Metal Laminates); and Composite technologies with two different manufacturing approaches: 1. AFP (Automated Fiber Placement); 2. Vacuum assisted resin infusion of dry non-crimped fibers (NCF).
The evaluation, development and integration of new technologies is just one of many offerings from Hawksland Associates. We have many decades of experience in this area, and are considered a leading authority when it comes to the management, design and manufacturing of aerospace structures. To find out more about how cost and weight savings can be achieved from combining different materials in aircraft fuselage panels see our paper presented at EUCOMAS in 2009 by Jens Hinrichsen - Senior Hawksland Associate.
